If your Residence Card (在留カード / Zairyu Card) or Period of Stay is about to expire, here's a step-by-step guide to renewing it in Japan.
Look at your Residence Card and check the Period of Stay (在留期間) expiration date.
Most visa holders can apply up to 3 months before the expiration date.
Permanent Residents renewing only their physical Residence Card can generally apply 2 months before the card expires.
The required documents vary depending on your visa status (Engineer, Student, Spouse, etc.), but typically include :
✅ Completed application form (Extension of Period of Stay)
✅ Current Residence Card
✅ Passport
✅ One passport-sized photo (4 cm × 3 cm)
✅ Documents supporting your current status, such as :
Employment Certificate
Certificate of Employment
Tax Certificate (住民税課税証明書)
Tax Payment Certificate (納税証明書)
Proof of salary
Student Certificate (for students)
Marriage Certificate (for spouse visas), if applicable
Immigration may request additional documents depending on your case.
Submit your application to the Regional Immigration Services Bureau that has jurisdiction over your registered address.

You'll receive a postcard or notification once your new Residence Card is ready for collection.

As long as you submitted your renewal application before the expiration date, you may remain in Japan under the special period (特例期間) while your application is being processed.
Apply as early as possible (within the 3-month application window).
Ensure your taxes and pension payments are up to date.
Report any changes to your employer, address, or marital status before applying.
Bring both originals and copies of important documents.
