Goodbye, summer heat—hello, autumn!
Autumn in Japan, or aki (秋), is one of the most anticipated seasons of the year. The weather gradually becomes cooler, leaves begin changing colors, and seasonal foods start appearing everywhere.
In 2026, Autumnal Equinox Day (秋分の日 / Shūbun no Hi) falls on September 23. It marks the time of year when day and night are nearly equal in length and is often associated with the seasonal transition into autumn.
Meteorologically, Japan generally considers September to November the autumn months, although September can still feel quite warm in many areas.
Don't expect everything to turn orange overnight!
Japan's autumn colors gradually travel from cooler northern and mountainous areas toward warmer regions.
Hokkaido & high mountains : September–October
Tohoku : October–November
Tokyo & Kanto : November–early December
Kyoto & Kansai : Mid-November–early December
The exact timing changes every year depending on temperatures and weather conditions.
Autumn isn't just about kōyō (紅葉), or colorful autumn leaves. It's also the season for chestnuts, sweet potatoes, persimmons, mushrooms, and other seasonal favorites.
You'll also notice cooler evenings, autumn festivals, seasonal decorations, and plenty of people heading outdoors for momijigari (紅葉狩り)—the tradition of going out to enjoy the beautiful autumn leaves.
Autumn Tip : Temperatures can change quickly during this season, especially between daytime and nighttime. Keep a light jacket or cardigan handy and check the weather before heading out.
And if you're planning an autumn trip, don't forget to check the latest fall foliage forecast—peak colors vary depending on the location and elevation.
Welcome, Autumn!
From colorful leaves and cooler weather to delicious seasonal food, maraming dahilan para ma-enjoy ang autumn sa Japan.
So, Kabayan, ano ang pinaka-excited ka this autumn—fall foliage, food, cooler weather, or autumn trips?
